A weird, unpleasant and unforgettable dream

There we were. 4 princes were in the woods. There was Shawn, Ethan (But we call him Loo, or Lou), William (he likes to be called Steve [Stiff]) and me. It rained all day and we went to the watering hole in search of animals. Despite the rain, the animals all showed up. The lambs, the wolves, monkeys and all.

The 4 princes were dancing in the Summer Rain when William caught sight of 4 toads by the hill nearby. He signaled for us to take a hike. There we joined the 4 toads. There was one toad, smiling retarded-ly, moving its petite body not so in-sync with the sounds of the jungle, but she smiled alot. William went ahead of us and chatted them up while the rest of us were doing the Boogie. I couldn't help but notice that one toad kept looking and smiling at me. Being polite I smiled back.

Next thing I know, the toad climbed unto my shoulders and shouted "Lena" or "Linna", I couldn't hear very well, with the jungle noises around. I guess it was trying to tell me its name. So I introduced myself. And I couldn't help but notice that whiny bitchy "nanny" voice of the toad. I thought to myself "God! that's annoying" The other toads were rather lazy, they were a little chunky as well. One of them was up on a wall hopping around, one was sticking around and the last one disappeared alot.

Turns out, Lena isn't from around the jungle. She's from a nearby tribe, and she visits the watering hole every so often. And she also told me she worked at "Nature's Farm" I didn't know what she did, honestly I didn't care. Her wet toad-ish feet had sticky suckers and it clung on to me. William was getting pissed. He wanted the toad, so thinking "friends before h*es", I backed off a little and Lena jumped onto William but within minutes she jumped right back on me.

She held my hand, went around my waist. Looked at me silly and smiled that rather annoying retarded smile. She thinks I'm hers to keep. She couldn't speak human very well, and I couldn't speak toad very well either, but we get by. She laid on my bosom, rested her hand in mine. Soon it was time to go. It was almost four, and I guess Lena has to return to her tribe. We hugged and gave goodbye kisses on cheeks, no lips no tongue, just the way I like it. Felt weird kissing a toad. But for some reason I thought she'd turn into a princess, but it was a mere thought. She left the watering hole.

The 4 princes took a slow hike down to a nearby hill and we went crazy. We found a Square Room, and did the Boogie. Then we saw a group of 9 birds flocking together. Must be fun! So we tried to join in. But we didn't speak bird very well, so they flew away. We noticed one fairy all by herself, laughing at Shawn as we made an ass of ourselves trying to Go West.

The fairy didn't do much, just looked at us. So I decided to do the Twist with her. I held her hands and shook asses. Fun. Wendy was her name, but she wasn't very intelligent. The princes danced beside her near the watering hole till the sun came up. The sun rose as Every Breath We Made became fresher. That was our cue to leave the watering to find our blue carriage to bring us back to our castle.

Weird little dream.

Job / Girl Search. It's all the same.

So some of you might have heard I've found a job. Amidst all the searching, I've found an uncanny similarity between the search for a job and a mate. It's just my own observation, so don't quote me on your essay papers. You might screw the paper up.

1. the search
There's an old saying. There's many fishes in the sea. Works both ways. Look at the newspaper today, there's aplenty of jobs (girls) everywhere. But not all suit you. Everyone has someone or a "type" in mind. The goody-two-shoes, angelic saint, naughty-but-nice, wildwildwild, intelligent, outgoing, athletic, the list goes on to management, sales, retail, media, teaching, government, military, politics. laa dee daa.

2. the fling
Depending on time, sometimes people just want to look a fling (temp), no string attached (no contract). While others are ready to settle down for a career (potential wife). Sometimes people moonlight with other freelancing jobs (affair). And some even need several to stay alive.

3. the headhunters
So after spending money on college, books and seminars (contact lenses, clothes and hair gel) to groom yourself with skills and knowledge, you finally graduate and start your search for the perfect one. Some guys, as they say, have all the luck. Others don't. Some better looking with higher GPAs are snapped up as quickly as they reach puberty. So too the ladies hunt them down, and mulit-national companies (MNC) lasso them in. The average looking and the not so talented ones sends out at least a dozen resumes, attend several interviews (dates) with several companies (women), and is probably still waiting a reply from the companies at home with their mommy. The dropouts (fugly people) are pretty much useless in this area. Unless of course they have special talents or skills that are specialized and needed by some fields of work (freaks).

4. the interview
I like to see it as the first date, first impression. If you messed up, you can start sing, "na na na na Hey hey hey Goodbyeee" So you put on your Sunday's best, "no jeans" they say. "Put on a tie" You get there 30min earlier. You bring along your credentials (flowers) to make you look good. You carry snazzy accessories (perfume, hair gel, snake-skinned bag) to show you have class and style. You walk with confidence. Big smile. Ever so polite with "please" and "thank you"s. You pulled out the chair, offered to pay, offered to give her a ride home. She looks at you and smiles, you look outside and you see a queue of people waiting in line. You pray that you don't see a friend behind.

5. the contract
So after several meetings, lunches and tests. They've finally agreed. You're on top of the world. She sits down with you and draws out a contract. It states your position: Creative Assistant (boyfriend) your working hours (times of the day to call and report), your salary (benefits). And you sign on the dotted line.

6. the work
So, if that's the type you were looking for, you'll probably have the time of your life. If NOT, you're dreading each day and complaining it to your friends over dinner. Oh wait you can't, she's having dinner with you. Some days just drags on. You stay up all night, sometimes you bring work home. Sometimes you call in sick just to skip work. You asks for a day off, and you get THE look. It states in the contract a minimum of 44 hours work week, but the key word in that statement is MINIMUM.

7. the promotion
So after working so hard. You get a promotion. From Creative Assistant to Creative Executive. Yeah, you can do more things now, more responsibilities. You probably attend more meetings at the office with the board of directors (her parents). And you probably get to move up bases when the umpire isn't looking.

8. the rival companies
After watching you promote and clinching so many deals, the other companies are starting to take notice. They send out headhunters at you. And other women notice you dress better, only because you can, and give you their phone numbers. They send you secret messages to butter you up, and inform you of the benefits of joining them. These companies are usually bigger companies, reputed for its underhand (back-stabbing) methods. You are tempted. Should you jump ship for the better benefits? Or do you stay loyal?

9. the "you are fired" (due to copyright issues I can't use the famous line)
You messed up. Caused the company to lose millions of dollars because you forgot its anniversary. The board of directors gives THAT face. Sometimes, the rival company (see pt.8) presents you an offer you can't resist. You want to initiate the resignation. So you either stop coming to work altogether (cold treatment) or you try to explain your case, that it really isn't her fault. You give back the company's christmas gift and you pack your table. Or you're just sick and bored of the work and people at the office. You want a change of scenery, a new challenge.

Flaming Email

To the DV Triathlon Organising Commitee,

I am from Cruiser Team (Group10) and I would like to congratulate on the completion of the Canon DV Triathlon. I applaud your efforts in making this competition a success. It was very encouraging to see local film makers and their works. Your technical support staff knowledge assisted us during the most crucial times of the day. The time limit was a challenging hurdle as we witness many teams not being able to complete their works on time.

However, I would like to address certain issues that my team has. The team and I were very upset during the screening portion of the competition. Honestly, upset would be an understatement. As we sat in the room from 8.30pm till 10pm, we did not see our work being screened. There were about 30-34 teams that day, each took about 3minutes, maybe less. If you do the math, that 1.5 hours would be enough to screen all the works. I would like an explanation why you chose not to screen the remaining works. We sat there anticipating to see our film, to see the audience reaction to our work, but it never came. However we did see a repeated screening of teams "tcube" and "dotz". Your actions or rather the lack thereof, has puzzled and upset us in many ways.

I am still questioning the many possibilties of what might have happened. Were we disqualified? The film made was not controversial, it has all the elements. Our team registered early, went to all the seminars, submitted our finished product at about 7.15pm, left for dinner while there were still many teams in the room still editing. We "shared" to our desktop, transferred to your portable hard drive. We did everything right. I'd like to state that the issue here is not about winning or losing. But the simple courtesy of screening of our works, as promised. I am greatly disheartened as a film maker to not be able to see my work screened, and worse not being to feel the audience reaction to the film. Art is subjective, and as film makers, our work was meant for the audience, to see their expression as they watch it. I invited friends to watch the screening, and my team mate got his parents down as well. Do you understand the gravity of your actions?

Were there other works not being shown as well? I believe that you owe them an explanation as well. Imagine what you have done, to destroy an aspiring director or future local film makers' dream. What is a film if its not shown. The least you could have done was to apologize to individual teams that were not included in the screening. Or if it was impossible to screen everyone's due to shop closure times or other reasons, we could have another screening on another day, where the judges could have taken their time to watch and appreciate all the works.

I would love to join next years DV triathlon. Like I mentioned earlier, I'm in full support for the local art and film scene. I believe we have many local talents and your actions should not put down or discourage their dreams. I want to hear back from you with your explanations. If you are not able to respond to this email I wish that you would forward it to someone who can.

Hi Kenneth,

Firstly, thank you very much for entering the inaugural Digital
Life-Canon
DV Triathlon. The response from the public as well as the quality of
clips
were much better than expected and we must credit it to your team and
the
rest of 30 odd teams who took part.

Let me clarify a little on the happenings of the competition's final
few
hours. The contest was supposed to end at 7.25pm (as per emcee Billy's
announcement) and the iShop crew was to go around saving everyone's
work on
the portable hard drive. This process took longer than expected as some
teams who edited till the final minute at 7.25pm needed more time
beyond
that to save their clips. There were 3 men going around saving the
clips in
3 different hard drives.

The clips were then transferred from the hard drives to a iMac located
in a
private screening room (its actually at the left side of the screening
lounge) where the judges viewed ALL the submitted works.
Only when the clips were transferred over for judging, then did the
iShop
crew bring the hard drives over to the screening lounge, for the clips
to
be downloaded to the iMac for public screening. Thus by the time we
started
the public screening, it was already about 8.25pm, instead of earlier
planned 8pm.
Each clip being about 3 mins, we can only screen an estimated 20 clips
for
an an hour from 8.25 to about 9.30, when the results were announced.
The movies that were shownn ran by alphabetical order
[weird cos my team name was Cruiser and the movie title was Armoogeddon],
with no repeat of movies. The winning teams' works were screened for the presentation of
prizes and it was a mere coincidence that they have been shown earlier
in
the general screening.

We must apologise for not screening all submitted entries and I can
definitely comprehend the disappointment that you and your team felt.
There
should have been better time management and tightening of technical
issues,
which we will work towards improving in the contests ahead.

Meanwhile, you will be pleased to know that all submitted entries will
be
uploaded on Asiaone.com for a fortnight for a "viewer's favourite"
contest
